Skills-Based Hiring Is on the Rise: When Diplomas and Degrees Are Not the No. 1 Factor
It's safe to say that skills are now becoming more valuable than diplomas and degrees. Evidently, over 76% of employers find new talent through skills-based hiring. And 55% of them implemented role-specific skill tests to find the right hire. Organizations even highlight skills and responsibility over qualifications in their job advertisements these days.

Surely, companies are seeing more positive results from hiring based on skills over degrees, as 92% of them experienced a reduction in the mis-hire rate.
While skills-based hiring offers companies agility and flexibility when it comes to placing talent on empty seats, it also opens a door for more talent to step into roles where they can perform best. It also encourages talent to continuously grow and develop themselves.

Now, as important as skills are in today’s Talent Acquisition scene, it doesn’t mean that education ceases to be valid. For job seekers out there, striking the balance between the two is a recommended move.

To help you stay ahead of the game and ensure that you stand out among the crowd in the race toward the dream job, here are some tips:

  • Sometimes, the role that you’re aiming at might not be aligned with your experience or skill set. So, stay updated with the in-demand skills. You can also add value to your profile by investing in upskilling and self-developing. It can be through joining courses or attending webinars and workshops, etc.
  • Make sure to highlight your skills. Look out for your desired jobs, examine the job descriptions, and mention skills that employers are looking for in those specific roles. Shine the spotlight on your special skills across job search materials like your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, etc.
  • Once equipped with the skill sets companies are looking for, it’s also important to practice those skills in a test scenario. This will come in handy when you’re being interviewed, and your hiring manager is asking you to demonstrate the skills in real-time.
  • Some candidates may look good on paper but might not be able to walk the walk. So, it’s important to practice your newfound skills in a test scenario. This will come in handy when you’re being interviewed, and your hiring manager is asking you to demonstrate the skills in real-time.
