6 Effective Techniques to Make Your Resume Stand Out

Resume is the first phase of introducing yourself and it factually presents your relevant experience, education, special skills and career goals. When you’re writing your resume, you want to impress hiring managers and get selected for an interview. So, it is important that you need to do everything you can to ensure it professionally stands out. It is also recommended that you should update your resume for each job application to ensure it is tailored towards the role you are applying and the organization. This will help enhance the opportunity for a job interview and an employment eventually.

Resume is an advertisement

A resume is a quick advertisement with an impactful short statement of who you are, what qualifications you have and why they should hire you. Therefore, you should make sure that every single word reflects and presents your unique selling proposition and says what makes you distinctive.

The 6 techniques to be considered when writing a resume are:

  • Focus on the top 1/3 of your resume
The top 1/3 of your resume is 'prime real estate' as it is the area where you really need to quickly capture the hiring managers’ attention. You have a very short amount of time approximately 20-30 seconds to make an impact. Thus, a summary, 4-5 sentences, of your exceptional qualifications should be stated here. This should provide the reader with a quick snapshot of the competencies you possess that make you a unique and qualified candidate. Your exceptional qualifications can either be your experience, accomplishments, education or your career objectives. You may include a link to your online portfolio. If you are going to attach your photo, make sure that your face is square to the camera with a neutral expression, clear, well defined and, the most importantly, it is not a “selfie” image.
  • Share your experience through your achievements
Achievements are the best showcase of your capabilities and experience. In the experience section, you should highlight the work-related achievements you may have. Make your achievements as concrete and explicit as possible. For instance, instead of telling what your responsibilities were as a Salesperson, you should explain how and how much you increased the company’s sales/revenue or state how you were recognized as a top performer or indicate your role or contribution to an important project.
  • Make your unique hard and soft skills an appearance on your resume
It is absolutely essential that you highlight the skills section of your resume with the “must-have” a very specific set of skills that you would consider yourself proficient in and that is valuable to the job you are applying for, for example, Negotiation skill, Interpersonal skill and Leadership skill. It is always very important to “tailor” your resume to fit the company and the position. Make sure that, for every skill you list on your resume, you can provide evidence of having used that skill in order to achieve something measurable. You should concisely describe the challenges you faced and how you used your skills to overcome them and achieve a good result.

  • Don’t be afraid to show your Passion
Most of the time, it's not your skills that get the job, it’s your Passion. So, show your potential employers that you’re ready to commit yourself to this job - heart and soul. Demonstrate your motivation and work values in your Career Goals or Career Objectives. This will help hiring managers to determine if you are a good fit for the job and select you for an interview. When you are able to analyze the company’s vision and what type of employee they are looking for, there is the high possibility that your resume will be considered to proceed further.

  • Use power words to spice up your resume
It is certain that a good resume should be written in English. A professional and well-written English resume should have not only the correct spelling, grammar and punctuation but also power words. By using powerful and dynamic action verbs, you can describe your experience, skills, and accomplishments very specifically and that will catch hiring managers’ eyes. Always pick words that reflect the true nature of your contribution, for example, action verbs for management skills, rather than using “Oversaw”, which hints that you were supervising work on a high level but not necessarily participating in a project actively, switch to “Established” which indicates you took the lead to create something new.

Each of these verb choices combines to give the hiring managers an impression of your work style – just be sure to avoid repeats – as multiple repetitions of an action word reduce the word’s impact and make for a boring read.

In addition, customize your resume with relevant technical vocabularies and powerful adjectives can set a tone for your resume and help it stand out from the others. You can check the powerful action verbs at this link here

  • Use standard professional resume format
In order to avoid having to read through the entire pile of resumes submitted for a position, a significant number of major organizations nowadays are using automated resume screening software to screen and filter them based on how the keywords they contain measure up to those sought by the hiring managers.

Infographics or reformatted resumes created through programs, such as Photoshop, Illustrator or other websites, are normally saved in JPG or PDF format and they can easily be screened out as the screening software cannot read them. Therefore, to ensure your resume gets passed the screening software, it is recommended to use Microsoft Word to create your resume and save it in Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF format.
